Pricing & Costs

How much does 3D printing cost?

3D printing at Hoosier3D in Indianapolis typically costs $10–$150 per part depending on size, material, and complexity, with quotes provided within 24 hours.

For a small bracket, clip, or simple replacement part, you're usually looking at the lower end of that range. Large, multi-hour prints in specialty materials land on the higher end. Do you charge by the hour or by the part?

Per part. You get a flat price before anything starts, not a time-based bill that could creep up on you. That price covers filament, machine time, and the work of prepping and finishing the print. No surprises after the fact.


Is there a minimum order size?

None. If you need one part, we'll print one part. There's no minimum quantity and no setup fee to print a single piece. Ordering in bulk doesn't hurt — larger runs often bring the per-unit cost down — but it's never required.


Turnaround & Process

How long does 3D printing take?

Most orders ship or are ready for pickup within 2 to 5 business days. Simple, small parts can sometimes be turned around the next day. Larger or more complex jobs may take longer.

How do I place an order?

Start by contacting Hoosier3D with your project details. You can upload a file, describe what you need, or share a photo or sketch. From there, you'll receive a quote with pricing and timeline. Once you approve it, production begins.

There's no complicated order portal. It's a direct conversation with Kraig, the owner.


What file formats do you accept?

The most common format is STL, which most 3D design software exports by default. We also accept OBJ, 3MF, and STEP files. If your file is in a different format, ask and we'll let you know if it works.


What if I don't have a 3D file yet?

That's not a problem. A sketch, photo, rough dimensions, or a clear description of what you need is enough to get started. Kraig can handle basic design conversion as part of the quote process. If your project requires complex original CAD work from scratch, that gets quoted separately.

Materials & Capabilities

What materials do you print with?

Hoosier3D prints in four FDM filament materials: PLA, PETG, ABS, and TPU. Each one has different strengths.

PLA is rigid, precise, and works well for display models, prototypes, and anything that won't face heat or heavy stress. PETG adds toughness and some moisture resistance, making it solid for functional parts. ABS handles higher temperatures and takes post-processing well. TPU is flexible and rubber-like, good for gaskets, grips, handles, and parts that need to bend without breaking.

Can you print in multiple colors?

Yes. The Bambu AMS system lets us print up to 4 colors in a single print. This is great for prototypes with labeled sections, branded items, game pieces, signage, and anything else where color does real work.

Multi-color prints do add some cost and print time compared to single-color jobs, but the capability is there when you need it. See the services overview for examples of what this looks like in practice.


What's the maximum print size?

The Bambu P1S has a build volume of approximately 256mm x 256mm x 256mm (about 10 inches per axis). That covers the majority of parts people need.

If your design is larger than that, parts can sometimes be split into sections, printed separately, and joined. Let us know the dimensions of what you're working on and we can tell you if splitting is a good option for your use case.


Can you match a Pantone or brand color?

Not exactly. Filament colors are not mixed to spec the way paint or ink is. We carry a range of colors and can often get close on common ones like blacks, whites, reds, and blues, but we can't guarantee a Pantone match.

If you have a specific brand color that matters, share the reference and we'll tell you how close we can get before you commit to an order.


Quality & Fit

How strong are FDM printed parts?

FDM prints are solid for most real-world applications. Parts printed in PETG or ABS can handle significant mechanical stress, repeated handling, and everyday use. That said, FDM is a layer-by-layer process, which means parts are not perfectly uniform in all directions the way injection-molded plastic is. They're strongest along the X and Y axes and slightly less so in the Z direction (the stacking direction).

For structural brackets, enclosures, jigs, tooling, and similar functional work, FDM holds up well. For parts that will face extreme sustained loads or critical safety applications, that's a conversation worth having before you order.


What's the accuracy and tolerance of your prints?

Typical dimensional accuracy is plus or minus 0.2mm. For most mechanical fits, snap connections, and functional parts, that's precise enough. Very tight-tolerance assemblies may need a test print and minor design adjustment to dial in the fit.

If your design has critical dimensions, call those out when you request a quote and we'll flag anything that might need attention.


Are 3D printed parts food-safe?

No. FDM printed parts are not food-safe for direct food contact. The layer-by-layer construction leaves micro-gaps between lines where bacteria can grow and where cleaning is difficult. This applies regardless of the filament type used.

For applications involving food, drink, or anything that goes in someone's mouth, use a certified food-safe manufacturing process instead. If you're unsure whether your application qualifies, ask and we'll give you a straight answer.

Do you offer local pickup in Indianapolis?

Yes. If you're in Indianapolis or the surrounding area, local pickup is available. It's a good option if you're on a tight timeline or want to inspect the part in person before taking it home.
